OTTAWA - If the Ottawa Senators have any chance of making the playoffs theyre going to need a lot more nights like Thursday. The Senators defeated the Montreal Canadiens 4-1 with a solid effort from start to finish.Weve got to take care of business at home, said goaltender Craig Anderson, who has allowed two goals or less in eight of his last ten starts. The teams that are in the playoffs right now have got really good home records. For us, weve got to win some games and put some pressure on the teams in front of us.Anderson was sturdy in goal stopping, 25 shots in his 399th game, while Jean-Gabriel Pageaus first of the season held up as the game winner.Mika Zibanejad, Erik Karlsson and Erik Condra also scored for the Senators (18-17-8).Max Pacioretty scored the lone goal for the Canadiens (27-13-3) as Dustin Tokarski turned away 31-of-34 shots. This marked the Senators first home game since returning from a four-game road trip, where Ottawa went 1-2-1, and they looked motivated to entertain the sold out crowd of 19,893.We had the jump, said Anderson. Montreal played and travelled. We had the fresher legs. We were able to capitalize and play hard and make it hard for them to attack our net. We didnt give them a whole lot.The Canadiens admitted they were far from their best and need to be better. Seven forwards finished the game without a shot on goal and coach Michel Therrien says thats just not acceptable. We need contributions from more than one line, said Therrien. Right now we only have contributions from one line and thats not good enough. The Canadiens had played the Columbus Blue Jackets Wednesday night and travelled right after the game and while they dont want to use the back-to-back as an excuse they felt it definitely had an impact. It is tough, Im not going to deny it, said Therrien. The back-to-back is not easy. Youre looking around the NHL, its tough to be back-to-back on the road, but when we got our legs going it was too late.Holding a 3-1 lead to open the third period, the Senators were determined not to make the same mistake they did in Dallas two nights prior when they squandered a two-goal lead to eventually lose the game.Ottawa played a sound defensive game and kept things simple as the Canadiens did their best to rally.Weve been on the road a lot, its tiring, said Karlsson. Its nice to be home. It felt like we had more energy from the start. We never let off the gas and it felt like for the first time in awhile we played three periods really well and it gave us the win.The Senators were up after the opening 20 minutes 3-1 and, despite playing much of the second period shorthanded and being outshot 14-7, were able to maintain the lead.We stuck to it, said Karlsson. We played well over 60 minutes and we didnt give them a lot. We played the system. We got pucks in and we got pucks out. We came out really strong. (In the past), weve had one period where we let it slip away and we didnt have that.Ottawa took four minor penalties in the second and if not for the play of Anderson and the fact the Canadiens power play has been less than stellar this season things could have changed very quickly.I dont think the power play was the reason we didnt win (Thursday), said Montreals Lars Eller. We didnt get the job done and execute it as well as they did. They capitalized on their chances and scored more goals than us and got the win.Zibanejad opened the scoring at 1:09 of the first period as he beat Tokarski from in close short side.Pacioretty tied the game at the 14-minute mark as he beat Anderson short side after taking a pass at centre ice. Ottawas Jared Cowen got a stick on the puck, but rather than pushing it away he put it right back on Paciorettys stick.Pacioretty is on a career-high six-game goal streak.Ottawa regained the lead when Pageau banged home Milan Michaleks rebound. This one felt really good, said Pageau, who scored three against Montreal in Game 3 of the 2013 Eastern Conference quarter-finals. It was my first one this year. It takes a lot of pressure off my shoulders. I was really happy to score.I celebrated like it was my 15th goal of the season, but it was only my first. Im very happy to put this behind me.Karlsson made it 3-1 early in the second period to put an end to a 15-game scoring drought as he beat Tokarski with a slap shot and Condra added a goal into an empty net in the final minute of regulation.Montreal had won its last four games against Ottawa going back to last season. The Senators are back in action Saturday night against Carolina, while Montreal will host the New York Islanders.Notes: D Chris Phillips and C Colin Greening were a healthy scratch. C Zack Smith (wrist), RW Chris Neil (knee) D Mark Borowiecki (leg) all remain sidelined for the Senators. Montreal C David Desharnais played his 300th NHL game. Baltimore trails first-place Cincinnati by one-half game after the Bengals blanked the Browns on Sunday to reach 9-4-1. Pittsburgh also kept pace in the tight race and improved to 9-5 with a win over Atlanta on Sunday. We didnt play smart all the time. We had too many mistakes, too many errors that kept us off the field or put our defense back on the field, those kind of things, said Ravens coach John Harbaugh. But Jacksonville did a good job. Thats a good young football team, especially on defense. That defense is salty and they get after you. Josh Scobee kicked four field goals to account for the entire offensive output for Jacksonville (2-12), which has lost two in a row. Blake Bortles threw for 210 yards with an interception for the Jaguars. He was also sacked eight times by a swarming Baltimore defense that limited Jacksonville to 248 total yards. The Ravens trailed 12-10 at the intermission and took the lead for good with their second possession of the second half, marching 80 yards on six plays. Flacco completed each of his five passes during the quick set, finishing it with a 3-yard strike to a wide open Owen Daniels in the back of the end zone. Jacksonville resorted to some trickery on its next possession, as a fake punt was successful and set up a first down just across midfield, but the Ravens stiffened and this time forced the Jaguars to punt it away. Justin Tucker hit the left upright a 54-yard field goal try with 8 1/2 minutes left in the fourth and the Jaguars were unable to mount a threat with their next two possessions. After punting the ball away with 6 1/2 minutes to play, the Jaguars got the ball back at midfield a little more than a minute later following a Baltimore punt. The Jaguars picked up 12 yards on the first play, but could not go much farther as Bortles 4th-and-9 pass was caught by Cecil Shorts out of bounds. A 10-yard run by Flacco on 3rd-and-5 allowed the Ravens to keep possession and drain more time off thhe clock.dddddddddddd A 28-yard burst by Bernard Pierce on the next play helped set up a 33-yard Tucker field goal to make it 20-12 with 1:11 remaining. Bortles was intercepted by Jeromy Miles on a fourth-down heave with 16 seconds remaining to seal the contest. Coming into this environment, (against) a playoff team, a team that plays as physical as they do, I thought our defense played extremely well, said Jaguars coach Gus Bradley. To come in their house and play like they did, hats off to our defense. The Ravens took 7-0 lead with a special teams touchdown, as Darian Stewart burst through the middle of the line and blocked Bryan Angers punt after Jacksonvilles first series. Kamar Aiken picked up the ball at the 11-yard line and trotted into the end zone. Jacksonville came right back and answered with a 53-yard Scobee field goal, then marched inside the Baltimore 10 with its next series. However, a pair of sacks pushed the Jaguars back to the 27 and forced a 45-yard Scobee kick to make it 7-6 late in the first quarter. The Ravens turned it over early in the second when Kyle Juszczyk fumbled after a short reception. Jacksonville took over at the Baltimore 33, but went backward from there and had to settle for another 53-yard Scobee field goal to grab a 9-7 lead. A surprise onside kick was recovered by the Jaguars, who managed to pick up one first down before Scobee missed from 42 yards to keep it a two-point game. Baltimore then regained the lead on the next offensive series when Tucker kicked a 22-yard field goal with 3:45 left in the first half. Tucker was short with a 54-yard kick with 40 seconds remaining and Bortles completed a pair of passes to move the Jaguars into position for a 45-yard boot from Scobee to take a 12-10 lead into the break.
